Wordsmithing!

As I am always eager to try new things–really, I can’t resist the lure–wordsmithing has now been something to which I have set my hand. I was asked if I would write the scroll text for a friend’s Silver Wheel (AOA service award in the East Kingdom). Since he has a Norse persona, I decided to try going for a Norse poetry feel. I experimented both with usage of kennings I had found and working on making my own.

This was given at the Fifth Ethereal Court of the Eastern Consuls on 10 January, 2021. Scroll by Arnora Ketilsdottir.

How shall the Consuls
Bestow ample honour
For the venerable service
The East received from Brandr,
Drotin Aronsson, nefsbrjotr?
Humbly in both hearth and forge
Has broad-handed Brandr
Given freely of his skill.

In many a crowded feast hall
As feeders of ravens return
Home from the whale-road
With growling bellies and empty horns
It is Nefsbrjotr who tends the pits
Cooking both mead and meat
That all may have their fill
And be content.

In the fierce heat of coal fire,
Slow-burning, iron-bending,
Does Brandr teach
Offering his skill long gathered
To those who gather
In the way of the One-Eyed
For not even plague
Can keep him thence.

In their wisdom
Do Tindal and Alberic
Gift the Silver Wheel
To Brandr nefsbrjotr Aronsson
For his service and mind’s worth
Given to the Kingdom
In this, AS LV, the Fifth Ethereal Court
Of the Eastern Consuls
